Adding a hdd of a different spec - pauly - 17-03-2019

I have a 918+ with 2x 8TB IronWolfs (IronWolves?!) now i have an extra WD Black 4TB (WD4003FZEX) spare so i was going to put that in also.

2 questions

1, Does it make any difference having different spec drives in? - my gut feeling is they're all 7200 so probably not really.

Looking at this comparison on userbenchmark i can't really see the wood from the trees.  Big difference in 4K Read is worrying, though i'm not sure i trust those figures.

2, How can i measure performance before & after?

Thanks

Paul

Are you adding it into one array or will it be there as a separate drive?

All into the same array - so will go to 1 x 12TB useable.

You won't added it into the same one. Can't add smaller drives then 8TB. Equal or greater then 8 is your option atm. Guessing those 2x8 are in SHR?

Yes they are in SHR - though according to the Synology Raid calculator i can do this - can't quite get my head around how it does it though!

Raid calc is for fresh array only, not when you add drives on an existing volume.

You can create new (2nd) SHR with the 4TB. Of course, with one drive, there is no RAID redundancy.
